A natural starting point for the first stage of Kystruta is Halden, which has good train connections. Cyclists arriving from Sweden can cross the border at Old Svinesund Bridge. Halden is an attractive border town dominated by the impressive Fredriksten Fortress, overlooking the town from the hillside. Before setting off, it is also worth visiting Rød Manor and its beautiful gardens.
There are few route signs at the beginning, so using a digital map is recommended. From Halden, you follow Torpumveien, a quiet country road, with fine views near Berg Church. The landscape is relatively flat, and much of the route follows smaller roads away from the main road, although some traffic, including occasional heavy vehicles, should be expected. At Gjellestad, you can see the burial mound where the Viking ship was discovered and learn more about this important archaeological site. The route continues through open farmland before passing Høysand beach, where there is a kiosk and a good place to take a break.
Just before Sarpsborg, Hafslund Manor and its beautiful park are well worth a visit. You can either end the day in Sarpsborg after around 30 km or continue along Glommastien to Fredrikstad, making the full stage around 47 km. Glommastien follows the Glomma River on a mix of gravel and paved paths and is well suited to both cyclists and walkers. Along the way, there are plenty of places to stop and several reminders of the area’s industrial history. You also pass the birthplace of polar explorer Roald Amundsen. The stage ends in Fredrikstad’s historic Old Town, with its narrow streets, restaurants and places to stay. Alternatively, take the free ferry across the river to the city centre, where you will find a wider selection of hotels and restaurants.
