Farm Cycling Svelvik

This tour begins in Svelvik, a charming coastal town just outside Drammen, known for its white wooden houses and picket fences—an idyllic summer destination. The area is also an important hub for fruit production, making it well worth visiting throughout the season: apple blossoms in May, strawberries in June, plums, cherries, and sweet cherries in July, and apples again in August.

Cycle past the Svelvik ferry terminal, where the ferry crosses to Verket on the Hurum side. This is Norway’s shortest car ferry—just a 5-minute ride—and a vital link along the coastal route. In the town center you’ll find several eateries, including Dreggen Kro, Lille kafé with a cozy garden and Lee’s China Wok with its own dock. A short detour takes you to Batteriøya, offering scenic views of the fjord and large ships passing close by on their way to and from Drammen. The current here is strong—Norway’s second strongest tidal current—making navigation challenging.

As you leave the center on a dedicated bike path, you’ll pass rows of fruit and berry fields. In May, the apple blossom is a spectacular sight. Berles Gårdsbutikk is a well-stocked farm shop offering products from the farm and other local goods that vary with the season. Open Thursday to Saturday. Nearby, Homannsberget Camping offers pick-your-own strawberries, cherries, and apples. At Bokerøya you’ll find a recreation area with an outdoor gym (Tuftepark). The route continues on shared roads with some traffic. Grunnane Nature Reserve is known for its rich birdlife, and the birdwatching tower provides excellent views across the bay. The road becomes hillier here, but after 9 km you’re back on a bike path. At Sand, there’s a convenience store and fast food options.

Next stop is Berger Gård, with a self-service farm shop offering apple juice, eggs, meat, and—starting in June—freshly picked berries and fruit. Nearby, Fossekleiva Cultural Center is beautifully located in historic industrial buildings by a pond. Once a textile factory, it now houses a museum, café, and cultural venue. Opening hours vary.
