The first stage of the Pilgrim Route begins at Svinesund, the border between Norway and Sweden. Halden is also a convenient starting point if you arrive by train. This pleasant border town is known for the impressive Fredriksten Fortress, which rises above the town on a hilltop.
The terrain is mostly flat, and you cycle along smaller side roads parallel to the main road. Some traffic should be expected, including occasional heavy vehicles. At Gjellestad, you pass an important archaeological site where a Viking ship was recently discovered, with burial mounds and information boards explaining the history. The landscape is largely agricultural, with open fields and scattered farms. Høysand Beach is a nice spot for a rest.
Before Sarpsborg, a visit to Hafslund Manor and its surrounding park is well worth a stop. From here, the route follows Glommastien towards Fredrikstad (total distance 47 km). This well-developed path runs alongside the River Glomma and is suitable for both cyclists and walkers. Along the way, you pass several pleasant rest spots, sections of gravel road and traces of Norway’s industrial heritage. You also pass the birthplace of Roald Amundsen, while Norway’s longest river flows quietly beside you.
The stage ends in the Old Town of Fredrikstad, a charming historic area with cafés, hotels and restaurants. Alternatively, you can take the free ferry across the river to the modern town centre, where there is a wider choice of accommodation and dining options. The ferry runs frequently.
