This short cycling route takes you past several of Halden’s main attractions.
The suggested starting point is Hotel Home Park – a bike-friendly hotel in Halden – but you can begin the loop wherever you like. The beautiful Rød Manor House, with its English garden, is a lovely place to visit. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this historic site. Continue on the cycle path towards the fjord, following the coastal trail along Iddefjorden. It’s a pleasant ride along the wooden pier as the fortress comes into view. Halden Harbour is a popular spot to enjoy a meal by the sea and watch the boats go by.
Get ready for the climb up to Fredriksten Fortress – but don’t worry, it’s worth it! The fortress is a spectacular historic site overlooking the town and fjord. Visitors can explore the old ramparts, enjoy the panoramic views, and learn about its dramatic role in Scandinavian history.
In Tistedal, there’s a cozy café with great pastries. After crossing the pedestrian bridge, continue along the pathway toward Lake Femsjøen and Vadet Beach. The return leg follows the Tista River, an area rich in industrial history. Industry has been active here since 1813, and as you follow the river downstream, you’ll see that production still continues today. In the small town center, you’ll find various shops and a park with a pavilion. Don’t miss the short detour to Rødsberget, where you’ll get a different perspective of the city and its surroundings – before ending your ride back at the hotel.
