A historic start along the Silver Road.
If you get to Kongsberg by train, you start the cycling 8 km up to Saggrenda. This is the origin of the Silver Road. During the summer season you can join the mine-train and visit the King’s mine deep into the mountain. The old Sakkerhusene close by were buildings constructed for weekly commuting miners. At the lake Saggrendadammen a swim can be nice on warm summer days. Continue back to Kongsberg for the Norwegian Mining Museum, Kongsberg Church and other attractions.
As the hills starts you will soon pass Norway´s oldest toll station – Bomstua. The revenues were used to maintain the bridges, and both Smedbrua and Lille Smedbrua are examples of this. Smedbrua is of the oldest stone arch bridges in the country, likely built in the 1760s. The road still narrows to its original width when it passes over. You need to get off the bike to really see the beauty of these bridges. During rush hour expect some traffic on the road between Kongsberg and Darbu. Take a short detour for the old Fiskum Church from around 1250, beautifully situated by Fiskumvannet. Small country roads brings you past Fossesholm Manor House, which dates back to 1541. Today it´s a historical gem with museum, café and arrangements. In Vestfossen there are several nice cafés.
The Hoen Hoard was a viking treasure discovered in 1834 near Hokksund. The large spade in the roundabout is an enlarged replica of the one used by the farmer who found the treasure. The find itself is displayed at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. Norway´s first glassworks at Nøstetangen from 1741 to 1777 is today a museum. The chandeliers in Kongsberg Church were made here at Nøstetangen. Next to the museum is Skriverparken, featuring large old trees, hedges, and sculptures.
You will past Temte Farm, an historic farm located between Hokksund and Krokstadelva, first mentioned in 1417. The farm features a unique collection of horse-drawn carriages and bronze horses in the courtyard. Only open on special occations. Brekke Bridge was built around the 1700s, serving as part of the main road until the mid-1930s. Today, it is overgrown and quietly fading into the landscape. Cycling into Drammen is nice on bike lanes and along the river banks. This city has a lot to offer of restaurants and activities and the welcoming Home Hotel Tollboden is located not far from the train station.
