Bodø
A coastal hub with easy access to Saltstraumen, Lofoten and scenic cycling routes.
Bodø is a vibrant coastal city just north of the Arctic Circle and a natural starting point for cycling adventures in Northern Norway. With its waterfront location, compact centre and excellent transport connections, it’s easy to arrive by train, Hurtigruten, express boats or cruise ships and start your journey by bike.
From Bodø, you can head south along the coast towards the famous Saltstraumen tidal current – the strongest in the world – where powerful currents create spectacular whirlpools several times a day. The surrounding area offers scenic coastal roads, quiet landscapes and great opportunities for both road cycling and mountain biking.
The city is also a gateway to some of Norway’s most iconic regions. From here, you can travel to Lofoten, Vesterålen, Steigen and Helgeland, combining cycling with ferries and coastal routes. Shorter rides around Bodø take you to beaches, viewpoints and local highlights, while longer tours connect you to the wider Kystruta network. During summer, the Midnight Sun creates long, bright days that are perfect for cycling at any hour, with golden light lasting well into the night.
