Ålesund is a compact city where much is within walking distance. With a bike, you gain a bit more radius and can cover even more attractions. There is a great opportunity to combine cycling with hiking on the city mountains.
Start with a trip up to Aksla. Park your bike by the city park and take on the path that is well facilitated with stairs leading up to several beautiful viewpoints. From the top, you get a great view of Ålesund city, the islands beyond, and the Sunnmøre Alps.
The center of Ålesund is full of buildings in Art Nouveau style. You will see this as you cycle through the city streets. Visit the Art Nouveau Center and KUBE to learn more about the style epoch and changing contemporary exhibitions. Ålesund also has a Fisheries Museum.
The tour continues out on the island of Hessa. Here there is a new opportunity to go on a mountain hike – to Sukkertoppen. There is a hiking trail up the 314 meters and there a panoramic view of mountains and sea awaits. The hike up and down takes about 1.5 hours. Further cycling continues around the island, with some gravel road, before the Atlanterhavsparken appears. This is the aquarium in Ålesund with a lot to experience and learn about life in the sea. Just outside the aquarium there´s a beautiful outdoor area with hiking trails close to the sea – at Tueneset. Adjust your cycling here for pedestrians.
Back in town, there are several baths to explore. Bybadet is an indoor swimmingpool close to the City Park. Or try Svai Sauna – a floating sauna in the heart of Ålesund – which you can combine with a jump into the fresh sea.
Ålesund hosts many good eateries – you´ll find something for every taste. Feel free to try the specialty bacalao, which is made from salt cod “klippfisk”. The proximity to the sea provides the city with a large selection of fresh fish and seafood.
