

On this bike tour along the harbourside in Tromsø you will feel the Arctic atmosphere. Many cosy wooden houses meet you when you bike along the harbourside from the city centre. The Polar Museum is located in one of these houses.
Tromsø´s architecture is an interesting mix of old and new, wood and brick. The new and modern part called Vervet – where the old ship yard used to be – has been transformed to a popular area with a lot of cafés, restaurants and flats. After crossing Tromsø Bridge the Arctic Cathedral awaits on the other side. If it´s open you may admire the unique architecture and glass mosaic inside.
Continue towards Fjellheisen where you can park your bike and choose between taking the cable car to the top of the mountain or climbing the Sherpa steps. At the top, there is an amazing view of the city and the mountains behind that is definitely worth seeing. There´s also a café at the top.
The road continues along the Tromsøysundet strait, offering beautiful views of fjord and mountains. Traffic gradually decreases the farther you get from the city. Out at Sandvika, you’ll find a lovely beach where you can enjoy peace and quiet. It’s recommended to bring snacks, as there are no shops in this area. Return back the same way to the city.

Tromsø established itself as the gateway to the Arctic Ocean and the Arctic from around 1850 and became a central base for polar expeditions in hunting, science and adventure/tourism. The Polar Museum preserves and conveys stories related to this part of the history of Tromsø and the Arctic.

The mountain Tromsdalstind is towering over the valley, and the iconic landmark, the Arctic Cathedral, roughly where the bridge ends. It is a natural first stop with its unique architecture and glass mosaic. The church is often open to visitors and in the summer season, there are also organ concerts here.
