
Cycle from the heart of the modern city to the Old Bergen. Pass by the most famous attraction – Bryggen – on your way. Get a little taste of the hills and be rewarded with beautiful views!
If you arrive to Bergen by train, the first thing you will meet is the pond Lille Lungegårdsvann in the city center. It´s a free space for strolling, relaxing and admiring the famous flowers rhododendron which Bergen is famous for. As you cross Festplassen and Torgallmenningen there will be a lot of people so take it easy on the bike. As you soon will experience, Bergen is full of cobble stones. Not ideal for cycling, but it brings a lot of old days charm to this historic city surrounded by seven mountains.
The scent from the ocean hits you as you get to the harbor-side. A lot of restaurants and food-booths offers a variety of food and snack – and seafood is of course very popular – and expensive – here. The colorful wooden houses at Bryggen has a place on UNESCO´s World Heritage List and is a living area full of local craft shops and restaurants. You cycle on the harbor side and avoid the traffic. Maybe you get a glimpse of the majestic school ship Statsråd Lehmkuhl. The Fortress of Bergenhus is worth a visit – this stonestructures are also calm, peaceful and green.
In Norway you´re alloved to cycle on the pavement if you adjust the speed, and for a short distance it may be convenient to do so, before you get to the bike lane. A tunnel for cyclists is also on route and for a period the traffic is quite busy. Make sure to stop at the Old Bergen Museum – this outdoor museum is just a really short detour away and it´s so beautiful located by the sea with old houses, hilly narrow streets, a charming pavilion and green fields to relax.
The way back runs uphill along the street with a view – Fjellveien. It´s partly gravel and asphalt, partly paths and small roads with low traffic and the constant view you get as you climb slowly uphill is really worth the effort! It´s plenty of benches and places to stop just to admire the city from above. Bare in mind that you share the roads with pedestrians, especially when the descends starts down to the city again. The lake Store Lungegårdsvann takes us back to the start.
It´s recommended to take this tour clock-wise due to hills.
