Cycling on Magerøya offers an extraordinary experience. The treeless tundra feels like another planet, and the reindeers add life to the landscape.
After 17 km, you’ll reach Tufjorden, a scenic rest stop with a view of the fjord. You’ll likely encounter many other cyclists along the way. The roads are narrow, and July brings a lot of buses and campers headed to Nordkapp. The route includes three steep climbs and several smaller ones, and it can be quite windy. Once you arrive at North Cape, you see the plateau and the famous globe. The vast view of the ocean is breathtaking, giving a sense of “endlessness.” The visitor center features cafes, a film about Nordkapp through the seasons, and various exhibitions.
Since there’s no accommodation at Nordkapp, it’s recommended to bike 15 km back to Skarsvåg, the world’s northernmost fishing village. Here, reindeer graze by the sea, and there are several vacation rentals, along with a campsite and restaurant. Daniels Hus is a popular dining spot in the summer, so booking ahead is wise. The food is great, as is the atmosphere. Even if it’s been a long day of cycling, the short 20-minute hike to Kirkeporten is worth it for the stunning view of Nordkapp and its iconic “horn.” In Skarsvåg, you can also visit Nordkapp Christmas & Winter House, which offers Christmas spirit all year round. At North Cape Experience in the harbor, you can join a RIB tour, see Nordkapp from the sea, and maybe spot some orcas.
On the way back to Honningsvåg, consider a 4 km detour to Kamøyvær, a fishing village where the boats are packed tightly together. There’s also an art gallery to explore.
Make sure to stock up on food and drinks in Honningsvåg, as there are no services until you reach Nordkapp, about 35 km away. Currently, it’s not possible to rent a bike in Honningsvåg, so you’ll need to bring your own. A good option could be renting in Tromsø and bringing it on the Hurtigruten.
