The cycle route is often referred to as the “Ishavskysten”/Arctic Coastline. It’s possible to bike the entire route between Båtsfjord and Berlevåg in one go, but consider including an overnight stay in the charming Kongsfjord/Veines.

The distance between Båtsfjord and Kongsfjord is 58 km. Begin your journey in Båtsfjord, a bustling fishing harbor with cabins, hotels, and eateries. Make sure to pack enough supplies, as there are no shops until Kongsfjord. Exiting Båtsfjord, the road climbs steadily, revealing a magical landscape that feels like biking across a high plateau. The views stretch far, showcasing the raw, vast nature. Be prepared for wind, as it can be quite strong in this region. After the climb, the road descends, and the scenery becomes greener, with small trees appearing. You’ll pass by local cabins before reaching the sea.

Kongsfjord is a charming small settlement with its own general store; a traditional shop and local meeting point with exhibits on the upper floor. Visit the local gallery for a touch of art and culture. Accommodation is available at Kongsfjord Arctic Lodge (formerly known as Kongsfjord Guesthouse), a popular spot in summer, where guests stay in cozy small cottages. In Veines, there are excellent hiking opportunities, such as the trail to the lighthouse and bird colonies. This path also passes Veinesodden Battery, remnants of a wartime military installation. Be cautious here, as the area contains unsecured ditches and holes.

The distance between Kongsfjord and Berlevåg is 33 km. This leg is easy and offers stunning natural beauty with majestic mountains, sea, and beaches. The route is mostly flat and makes for a pleasant ride, but watch for strong winds this far north. Along the way, you’ll see the Finnmark Fisherman’s House – a reconstructed building showcasing how a fishing family lived during the war. The Sandfjord Beach is sandy with blue, cold water! Kjølnes Lighthouse is a beautiful stop a few kilometers before reaching Berlevåg.

Berlevåg greets you with its impressive breakwater, reinforced with tetrapods – an engineering feat that strengthens by the forces of the elements. In Berlevåg, you’ll find shops and eateries. If you’re looking for more adventure, you can bike past the airport and go on a hike to Tanahorn for breathtaking views of the area.
