This is a truly delightful and varied loop through the northern part of Finnskogen. The journey is described starting from Elverum, which can be accessed by bus, but you can begin anywhere along the route.
Leaving Elverum, you’ll quickly find yourself on small gravel roads leading to Lisjøen—a gem worth a stop. Continue through the forest down the Northern Kynna River, where several spots are great for tenting, campfire, and rest areas. At Kynnbrua, there’s a pavilion that once served as a popular meeting place for dance and entertainment among the locals. From here, the route proceeds to Gravberget on a lightly trafficked asphalt road. There will be some elevation, but it’s fairly easy to cycle. The route offers stunning views over forests, hills, and lakes, so take a break and enjoy the scenery. Gravberget Farm is a small, family-run hotel that offers overnight accommodation for those who wish to split the journey into two days. Make sure to book upfront.
From the village of Gravberget, the route soon heads north along the Wilderness Route—National Cycle Route 9—on gravel roads. The path undulates up and down to Trysil Road. Although this is a busy road, the cycling route follows side roads, and it’s surprisingly quiet and peaceful to ride here. The gravel roads traverse cultural landscapes and gradually descend. It’s a wonderful way to end the loop, arriving back at Hernes and Elverum on the bike path.
The tour is long, but splitting it over two days makes it accessible for many. Use a bike suitable for gravel, as some sections can be quite coarse. Make sure to bring food and drink – as there´s no place to get this other than in Elverum and Gravberget.
