The coastline of Norway is spectacular, wild and with a nature that can take your breath away. Combining cycling with the ships from Hurtigruten and Havila is a great way to experience Norway´s northernmost coastline – Finnmark.

The vast distances, deep fjords, and sparse services in the region make the combination of bike and boat a great way to explore without overly strenuous cycling stages. The ships serve as an essential transportation network for locals and visitors alike, with daily departures northbound and southbound. Each harbor and small village along the coastline has its own character, while the dramatic, untouched landscapes create a one-of-a-kind cycling experience. The season typically runs from May to September, but the Arctic weather can be unpredictable, so preparation is key. The midnight sun provides long, light-filled days and nights for much of the summer, adding to the magic of the journey.

These tours are not organized, so you bring your own bike or rent and do your own booking at the ships and hotels. But here you get digital maps, descriptions and hopefully – inspiration – to hit the road with the bike and get some unforgettable memories. Our described day-to-day plan is just a suggestion – feel free to make your own adjustments.

There are two companies that sails the Norwegian coast from Bergen to Kirkenes and back – Hurtigruten and Havila. They sail day and night, so some places are visited during night on the northern route and by day on the southern route. We have considered this when we have planned the route to avoid on- and off during nights. The two ferry companies share the route, so it´s important to check entur.no for departure days. You may book your spot on the ships online, but note that there is also an additional fee for bringing your bike. Make sure to call ahead to reserve a spot for the bike: Hurtigruten: +47 7759 7163. NOK 200 pr. stretch. Havila Coastal Route: +47 7000 7070. NOK 210 pr. stretch.
