The cycling continues along Rødnessjøen on quiet country roads. As you approach Ørje, choose the charming backroad into this idyllic village. Here you’ll find a canal museum, gallery, several cozy cafés, a sports store, and a grocery shop. If you’re lucky, you can watch the fascinating spectacle of boats passing through the canal locks.
We are now very close to the Swedish border, where the two cycling routes, Villmarksruta and Unionsleden, intersect. From Ørje, we choose to cycle along the western side of the canal, recommended for its lower traffic, even though the officially marked Route 9 runs on the eastern side. Ahead lie winding country roads toward the next village, Strømsfoss. Here you’ll find Møllerens Hus, a welcoming café by the canal. The old Strømsfoss Mill has been transformed into an art gallery. Nearby, at Kanaltangen, you can experience unique overnight stays in “Stubbehytter,” small wooden cabins where you sleep in hammocks (bring your own). To book, call +47 41 33 89 00. Coastal Cabin “Fjøset” is also possible to book for self-service in Strømsfoss.
