Leaving Halden, you follow a dedicated cycle path along the main road.
While the start of the route passes through industrial areas, it’s safe and easy to follow. This region has a strong WWII history — over 15,000 people fled across the border to Sweden via routes that passed through this very landscape. As you climb toward the old Svinesund Bridge, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the Iddefjord and the new bridge farther out toward the coast. Once across the border, you can stop for coffee and snacks — or continue to Nordby, the ultimate shopping destination for Norwegians in Sweden. You’ll share the road with cars here.
Continue to one of the tour’s highlights: passing Hogdal Guesthouse from 1856 and following the quiet old road to Dynekilen, a peaceful fjordside stretch. This tranquil waterway hides a dramatic past: in July 1716, the Battle of Dynekilen took place here, when Norwegian naval hero Peter Wessel Tordenskiold attacked and destroyed a Swedish supply fleet during King Karl XII’s campaign against Norway. Today, the surroundings are peaceful and scenic — an ideal spot for a cycling break.
You’ll then ride 4–5 km on a moderately trafficked road before rejoining a cycle path that leads you into Strømstad. Don’t miss the trail from Tången, a beautiful stretch along the water with reeds, birds, and sea views. Keep your speed low — this is a popular walking area. The stage ends at the harbor in Strømstad, a lively and charming coastal town with boats, ice cream stands, hotels, and ferry departures to the Koster Islands and to Sandefjord in Norway.
