Your return journey begins peacefully along the harbor in Strømstad, then continues northeast on a quiet cycle path before transitioning to low-traffic country roads. Soon, you’re surrounded by forest, fields, and gently rolling hills. The surface varies from tarmac to gravel and forest trails. You’ll pass green meadows, small lakes, and silent woods. There are no shops or cafés along the way, so bring a packed lunch and water.

You’ll cross back into Norway almost without noticing and arrive at one of today’s highlights — Berby Manor, a beautiful estate by the Enningdal River. The manor dates back to medieval times, and the current main building was constructed in the 1700s. Once a meeting place for nobles and civil servants, Berby has a long tradition of farming, forestry, and hunting. Today, the property is still in use and also hosts nature-based education and recreation.

From here, the route follows old travel roads to Glende Bridge, a lovely 19th-century stone arch bridge over the river at a natural crossing point. It’s a quiet, scenic place for a short break. At Prestebakke, there’s also a picnic area and a small beach.
The route then enters a nature reserve and forest area with a clear wilderness character. You ride gravel roads and trails past lakes, farms, and woodland. The final kilometers take you through cultivated farmland and up a gentle hill before the dramatic silhouette of Fredriksten Fortress comes into view — a striking landmark that marks your return to Halden.
