Red ´1 Kystruta´ signs

This is a long and varied cycling journey, offering a mix of coastal beauty, open landscapes, and dramatic mountain terrain. Be prepared for a challenging but incredibly rewarding ride!

Leaving Lyngdal, the route starts with a series of hilly climbs, passing through a somewhat remote landscape with only a few scattered houses. The terrain consists of continuous ups and downs, making for a dynamic ride. At one point, Route 1 (Kystruta) is signposted midway down a descent, leading onto a gravel road over the hill. If you instead  continue down towards the sea, you´ll passing through Bjørnevåg and Farsund Resort – by the fjord, with peaceful surroundings. Back on the main road, the ride into Farsund can be a bit challenging due to traffic for about 9 km. Once in Farsund, you are greeted by a charming white town, filled with elegant houses, some featuring Art Nouveau architecture. There are hotels here for those wanting to break up the journey. The area has a strong historical connection to Norwegian emigration to the USA, and you´ll see signs for Route 8, a reference to the famous Route 66 in the United States.

From Farsund, the ride towards Lista is a delightful change—flat and easy, reminding of the landscapes of Jæren with its wide-open fields and coastal views. Lista is known for its long beaches and the historic Lista Lighthouse. The store at Borhaug is the last one until Kvinesdal. Beyond Lista, the route becomes more undulating but remains stunning. The landscape is a mix of heaths, rolling hills, ocean views, farms, and sheep grazing along the roadside. The ride is demanding but incredibly scenic.

There is a fair amount of gravel today, but the road quality is generally good. As the route progresses, the terrain becomes steeper and more isolated, with dramatic cliffs and rocky landscapes. Finally, the descent into Kvinesdal is a thrilling one. The town is clearly nestled between mountains, running along a river and set a bit inland from the open sea. The hotel in Kvinesdal is located up a hill with an incredible panoramic view.
