A beautiful day of cycling along the southern coast, starting and ending with charming boat rides and passing through some of Norway’s most idyllic small towns.
The day begins with a wonderful boat trip from Kragerø to Stabbestad, followed by a steep climb as you leave the ferry terminal behind. You continue cycling toward Øysang, a scenic 20 km stretch through forests, lakes and winding southern roads. You´ll pass a grocery store on the way. From Øysang, a second ferry takes you across to the white-painted coastal gem of Risør – always a delight to approach from the sea. This is a lovely place to pause for lunch or a coffee before continuing. Here you will also find grocery stores and hotels. If ferry schedules are tight, an overnight stay at Jegertunet in Øysang is a good alterntive. If the boat is not running, the alternative route through Søndeled adds about 30 km and nearly 600 metres of climbing.
From Risør, the route continues with rolling terrain, short climbs and twisting roads where summer traffic can be busy. There are several picnic spots along the way, but few places to buy food, so plan accordingly. The scenery varies beautifully between forest and coastline, with one short, narrow tunnel to pass through. After 54 km you reach Tvedestrand, an idyllic southern village with cobblestone streets, small cafés and a lively harbour in summertime – the perfect place to end today’s ride.
