Get ready for Rallarvegen – one of the most popular cycling routes in Norway!
Today’s stage starts along the main road – with some traffic – leaving Geilo, with a steady climb for about 10 kilometers until you reach Ustaoset, where there is a grocery store. The route continues along Ustevatnet towards Haugastøl. Here, after 23 km, you can grab a bite to eat at Haugastøl Turistsenter. At this point, cycling along the busy main road ends, and the gravel road of Rallarvegen begins. It´s possible to take the train between Geilo and Haugastøl if you want to skip the main road. For the first few kilometers from Haugastøl, there is some car traffic to the cabins, but soon the surroundings become quiet and calm. The route steadily ascends, and the landscape opens up, revealing water and mountains on all sides.
Rallarvegen was originally the construction road for the Bergen Railway, and the train frequently passes close to the cycling path. Along the way, you might encounter sheep on the road, and perhaps even spot a lemming running by. Since the route is above the tree line, there are no tall trees, but the area is rich with heather and mountain flowers. At Oksebotn, there is often a café where you can enjoy a waffle.
As you approach Finse, the Hardangerjøkulen glacier comes into view, along with Finsevannet. Finse is accessible only by train, bicycle, or on foot – not by car. After cycling, you can opt for a short hike if you’d like, or simply relax and enjoy a well-deserved rest after the day’s effort. Hotel Finse 1222 and Finsehytta offers accomodations at Finse. Be aware that weather can change at this high altitude, and the season is short – typically from July – September. Check status here: Rallarvegen Report
A vital hub for cyclists, the Haugastøl Tourist Center provides essential amenities. Whether you're looking to rent a bike, savor local cuisine, or require parking, this center has you covered.
Local grocery store. Opening hours may vary.
Nestled in a serene setting, Oksebotn Café is a quaint, privately-run place that offers vaffles. Just remember, its opening hours can be sporadic.
Step into history at the Rallarmuseet Finse, where vivid exhibitions narrate the tales of the railway's creation between 1894-1909.
Acting as a crucial junction on the Rallarvegen route, Finse Station is a beacon for cyclists, especially those keen on avoiding the ascent from Haugastøl.
