Haugastøl – Finse
This first stage of Rallarvegen is fairly easy cycling. For the first few kilometres, there is some car traffic to the cabins, but after a while it becomes quiet and calm and there is no traffic. It goes steadily upwards on dirt roads and the landscape opens up with water and mountains on all sides.
Rallarvegen was the construction road used during the construction of the Bergen Railway and the train passes at regular intervals close to the cycle path. There are great opportunities to meet sheep on the road and the occasional lemming may dart past. Since the area is above the tree line, there are no tall trees, but a lot of heather and mountain flowers along the route. At the Oksebotn guard house there is a cafe where you can get a waffle.
As you get closer to Finse, the glacier Hardangerjøkulen reveals itself, Finsevannet and the hotel Finse 1222, which is the destination for Day 1. You can only go to Finse by train, bicycle or on foot – not by car. It is possible to include a small hike if you wish after cycling. Alternatively, just enjoy the well-deserved ones after today’s efforts.
Mostly gravel, 500 altitude meters up/280 altitude meters down.
