When you leave Rysstad today, make sure to bring enough food and drinks – as there may be far to the next place to buy anything. The first 3 km follow along the main road, but then the bike path crosses the river, and a long stretch of quiet country road with almost no traffic begins. Don’t be surprised if you spot an elk running on the mountainside.

After 24 km, you’ll reach the Austad old cemetery, situated idyllically with a view of the river and mountains. It´s possible to take a little detour towards Ose where you will find a convenience store and food at Ose Turistheim – check for opening hours. After an additional 17 km, you´re crossing the river and will find the nice rest area Storstraumen. Byglandsfjord is a charming village with a shop and a hotel with a restaurant. At the pier, you can see the steamboat Bjoren, which operates on Byglandsfjorden during summer.

At Syrtveitfossane, the river rushes with white foam, and at TrollAktiv, you can join rafting in rubber boats down the rapids. Learn more about it here. There are also accommodation options here if you wish to end your day here. If you continue for 7 km, you’ll reach Evje, and this stretch follows the old railway route on a nice gravel road. In Evje, you’ll find shops, restaurants, and hotels. Hotel Dølen is beautifully located along the river and also offers food.

Even though today’s stage is quite long, it’s an easy ride and mostly downhill. However, it’s a good idea to start early so you have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.
