From gentle rivers and forest trails to the wild, remote beauty of Lurudalen, this ride delivers true Norwegian wilderness and ends in peaceful comfort at Landsem Farm.
The ride today offers great variety and plenty of highlights. Following the river Namsen, you pass several charming overnight options. Have a stop at Jenny at Jørem for freshly baked buns on Fridays in July. At Grong – after about 17 km – you should stack up on what you need for the rest of the day. Here there is also hotel and guest farm. On warm days, check out a refreshing dip in the natural “pool” Tømmeråshøla nearby. From here the route leads into the forest, following a new river, with the chance to stop at a waterfall before the character of the ride begins to change. Keep an eye on the map so you don´t miss the exit after Formofossen.
This is where the old navvies road through Lurudalen take over. At first the gravel riding is straightforward, though some sections are washed out and require attention. The track gradually narrows into single trail, with roots and short climbs where you may need to push the bike. Experienced riders will enjoy the challenge, while others can take it slower, stepping off the bike where it gets tight or steep. The solitude in the forest is striking, with a true sense of wilderness – at times even a little mysterious – but the atmosphere grows on you as you follow the winding trail along the river. You are close to the national park Blåfjella – Skjækerfjella, known for wildlife – including moose and brown bear.
The route follows a hiking trail that runs close to the track of Nordlandsbanen, where you might even glimpse a train passing through the valley, or through a tunell. It’s an impressive sight, but it is essential to remember never to cross the railway tracks at any point. Eventually the path improves again, passing a few cabins before opening up towards Landsem. At Landsem Farm you can enjoy overnight accommodation – a fitting end to a stage that blends riverside scenery, forest adventure, and a true taste of wild Norway.
