The western route from Kongsberg to Rjukan takes you through forests, past lakes and rivers, and up into the impressive mountain landscapes around Gaustatoppen. This is a hilly and sometimes demanding route, but the views are well worth the effort.
The first part follows mostly quiet roads through wooded countryside, passing farms, lakes and small settlements. There are several pleasant places to stop, including Bolkesjø Gård. The route passes Gransherad, with accommodation options along the way, before continuing towards Tinnoset and its historic railway and ferry connections.
Beyond Tinnoset, the climbing becomes more demanding. The road winds through the forest, partly on gravel, before descending towards Tuddal. From here, a particularly steep climb leads into the mountains, where the trees gradually give way to open landscapes and magnificent views of Gaustatoppen. Tuddal Høyfjellshotell is a particularly charming place to stay along this section.
The final stretch offers a wonderful descent towards Rjukan, with views of the deep valley below. The town is known for its industrial heritage, historic power stations and famous sun mirrors. From Rjukan, the route continues to Krokan, the historic destination of Kunstnerleden, with views towards Vemork and the dramatic gorge along the way.
