Conquer the hills from Drammen to Oslo – on historic tracks.
It´s a gentle start leaving Drammen along the river banks. A brief and interesting stop can be made at the Huseby Farm that dates back to AD 400-800. According to tradition, St. Hallvard – later known as the patron saint of Oslo – is believed to have come from Huseby. The area includes Viking Age burial mounds with information boards explaining the early history of the site. Today, the farm remains in use.
From Lier the route will be very hilly for a short stretch. The gravel roads passes Lier Open Air Museum. Enjoy the charming, old farm houses and the calm atmosphere. Continue the Paradise Hills. This steep section is known both for its beautiful scenery and for challenging travelers and cyclists alike. The gravel continues through Tranby landscape area and Gjellebekkmyrene nature reserve. This is part of the old Kings Road and here, in the middle of the forest, a marble obelisk has been raised in memory of King Frederick V’s visit here in 1749.
Continue on low-traffic roads towards Asker were you´ll find cafés and stores. It´s an option to add an extra stay at Øvre Sem Farm – an idyllic farm at the Lake Sem 1,5 km off the route. The Asker Museum is located in “the Artists´ Valley” and has a nice garden. The traffic gets more present as you get closer to Oslo, but the bike lanes are safe. A short detour south on the west side of the river takes you to Kjørbo Farm – Sandvika’s oldest farm, dating back to the Early Iron Age. The surrounding park is open to the public. Sandvika is also a center with shops, cafés and a beautiful beach at Kadettangen. Malmskrivergården is a farmstead dating back to 1640, overseeing the transportation of ore.
The last stretch to Oslo is along the fjord and the Oslo City Hall comes into view at the harbour. Explore also Christiania’s first town hall, built in 1641 with support from King Christian IV – the same king that founden Kongsberg. Today, the building is home to restaurant Gamle Raadhus. If you want to explore more about the Hoen Hoard, check out the Historical Museum.
