Farm Cycling Lier

This scenic cycling route starts in Asker, easily accessible by train and with cafés and shops where you can stock up before the ride. The route begins with a steady climb through residential areas before transitioning into more rural surroundings. Soon you’ll find yourself on a gravel road that cuts through the tranquil Tranby landscape area and the Gjellebekkmyrene nature reserve—once part of the old King’s Road between Kongsberg and Oslo. Here; in the forest, you’ll pass a striking marble obelisk, placed in memory of King Frederick V’s visit in 1749.

As you leave the forest, the landscape opens up with sweeping views of the valley toward Drammen. You’ll descend toward Tranby, passing rows of fruit orchards and farms, some with seasonal farm shops like Fruit- and Christmastree Farm offering fresh produce. Adventurous riders can take a detour up to Lier Bygdetun for a taste of local history and a panoramic view, or stay on the main route that follows the old Drammen railway line—now a dedicated walking and cycling trail with benches and viewpoints. Don’t miss a stop at Lierkroa for a snack or a famous soft ice, and consider a stop at Huseby Farm with its Viking burial mounds and local heritage history. Although it´s a lot of traffic in this section, you cycle on safe cycle paths.

Further along, stop by the Grøntbua farm shop at Gilhus Gård for seasonal fruits and vegetables, perfect to bring for a picnic at Gilhusodden Beach—a peaceful area with lawns, shallow water, and views of the fjord. Just a short walk away is the Linnesstranda Bird Tower, where over 200 bird species have been recorded. The route continues uphill past vegetable fields, Lier Station and Lierkroa again, before reconnecting with the old Drammen railway line. You cycle through a colorful tunnel along the path before your journey ends in Spikkestad, where you can catch the train back to Asker or Oslo.
