A varied roundtrip south of Bergen, combining city, nature and cultural highlights.

The route follows bike paths out of Bergen towards Fana, taking you through a mix of city areas, lakes, suburban neighbourhoods and small forests. Along the way, you’ll pass Gamlehaugen, the royal residence in Bergen, where the gardens are open to visitors and make for a great stop.

A short detour leads to Troldhaugen, the former home of composer Edvard Grieg, now a museum with a café and beautiful surroundings. Further on, the route passes Hordamuseet and follows parts of the old Os railway, now a scenic path around Kalandsvatnet with peaceful nature and open landscapes. Nesttun or Lagunen are good places to stop for food today.

On the return, there is a steady 2.5 km climb as you leave Kalandsvatnet. At the top, you’ll find a grocery store – a good place to refuel before continuing. It will also be a little uphill to Fantoft Stave Church, a reconstructed medieval church originally built around 1170 and rebuilt in 1997 after a devastating fire. Enjoy Store and Lille Lungegårdsvann as you get back to Bergen and Bryggen.

The Fantoft Stave Church has a long history. It was built around 1170 in Luster in Sogn. In 1883 it was moved and restored at the current location in Fana just outside city center of Bergen. A dramatic fire in 1992 burnt the church to the ground. The fire was most likely purposeful, but no one was convicted. It was decided to rebuild the church – a challenge since stave churches hadn´t been built in Norway for centuries. The new church was completed in 1997.
