Alta
The City of The Northern Light
Alta – where the sea meets the Finnmarksvidda.
The clear skies over the Finnmarksvidda plateau, the long dark nights, and a relatively mild climate at 70 degrees north make Alta one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights. Alta has a stable inland climate with many clear nights, allowing the northern lights, or Aurora Borealis, to be visible most winter nights. If you choose to visit in winter, you can go on a northern lights hunt by fatbike. There are several options for short and long cycling trips into the plateau on prepared trails. Whether you choose glamping in a Canvas Dome, the ice hotel, or a regular hotel is up to you.
The rest of the year is also ideal for cycling in Alta. With its relatively flat topography, Finnmarksvidda is perfect for trail and gravel cycling. It’s no coincidence that the world’s toughest MTB race, Offroad Finnmark, takes place here. Enjoy the nature with rivers, lakes, glaciers, fjords, cloudberries, midnight sun, and reindeer! Alta is also a hub for further cycling adventures, with multiple boat connections to the surrounding islands and to the next town, Hammerfest.
The rock carvings are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, with some up to 7,000 years old. This ancient art provides insight into the rituals surrounding hunting, fishing, and the life of ancient people. Alta is also a center for Sami culture in Norway, with opportunities to learn about and experience Sami traditions.
