The charming city by the river

Drammen is a key hub for cyclists – an ideal place to pause and explore iconic bridges, a beautiful waterfront promenade, historic manor houses, and both old and new industrial heritage.

If you arrive from Oslo or Asker, you’re rewarded with a spectacular view as you descend the Lier/Paradisbakkene hills into the city. In the centre you’ll find modern hotels, a riverside campsite, a good selection of restaurants and attractions, charming historic streets and alleyways, and easy access to nearby nature.

Several national cycle routes pass through Drammen. The Numedal Route continues along the river toward Kongsberg, while the Coastal Route heads south toward Sørlandet and beyond. For cyclists travelling to Bergen or Stavanger, Drammen is a natural stopping point. Norway’s first public road – the Silver Road (Sølvveien) – begins in Kongsberg and runs via Drammen to Oslo.

There are also many short and easy cycling loops around the city. The areas surrounding Drammen are rich in farms producing fruit, berries and vegetables; both the spring blossom and the autumn harvest are worth experiencing. Large outdoor recreation areas such as Finnemarka, Kjekstadmarka and Konnerudmarka are ideal for day tours starting from Drammen. With excellent train connections to and from the city, it’s easy to get here and combine cycling with rail travel.
