Border Town and Fortress Town in the South East

Welcome to the charming fortress town of Halden — rich in history, small-town charm, waterfront life, old industry history and green experiences.

Nestled at the innermost point of the Iddefjord, Halden is easily reached by train from both Oslo and Gothenburg. Spring arrives early here, often in April. A visit to the majestic Fredriksten Fortress offers both historical insight and panoramic views over the town and fjord. Be sure to stop by Rød Manor and its elegant gardens, or enjoy the tranquility from the viewpoint at Rødsberget.

Halden is a great starting point for several cycling tours in the area. The nearby Ertemarka forest invites you to explore peaceful gravel paths, while a ride to Brekke locks — Europe’s highest lock system still in use — makes for an impressive day trip. You can also cycle a two-day roundtrip across the border to Strømstad in Sweden, combining fjords, forests and cultural landmarks. Or follow the scenic Halden Canal route, with quiet country roads between small towns and historic lock stations along the way.

For long-distance riders, Halden is also a gateway to two of Norway’s national cycle routes. Kystruta follows the entire coastline from Halden to Nordkapp. Villmarksruta heads inland toward Trysil and Trondheim, through forests, lakes, and unspoiled nature. Whether you’re dreaming of a gentle day trip or an epic journey on two wheels, Halden is the perfect place to begin.
