The Northernmost Port of Hurtigruten

A traditional fishing village with a rich history – and thousands of Santas!

Mehamn has been a trade center since the Pomor era, during which Norwegians traded with Russians from the late 1700s until World War I. Due to long distances and limited connections southward, trading eastward was more accessible, with fish from Finnmark exchanged for goods such as flour, butter, cheese, timber, tea, iron, and rope from the Pomor region around Arkhangelsk. Whaling also played a role on the Nordkyn Peninsula, and Mehamn hosted a whaling station from 1885 to 1903.

Today, fishing remains important for the town, although tourism has also gained popularity. Be aware that the weather can change quickly, and the wind can be much stronger than one might expect.

Midnight Sun between May 13 and July 31.
