Follow the route of the former Lier Railway from Drammen to Lake Tyrifjorden on a scenic ride through orchards, farmland and peaceful countryside. Today, the old railway line has been transformed into a pleasant trail, offering nice riding, beautiful views and a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history.

The tour starts at Drammen Railway Station, crosses the river and follows cycle paths along the Drammenselva before gradually climbing towards Lierbyen. From here, you continue on the former Lier Railway, which operated between 1904 and 1937, connecting Lierbyen and Svangstrand. The railway carried both passengers and goods through the Lier Valley, and at Svangstrand travellers could board a steamship for a cruise on Lake Tyrifjorden before returning by train. Along the route you pass orchards, farms, forests and open pastureland, where sheep often graze during the summer. Remember to close the gates behind you. Egge Farm, well known for its award-winning apple juice, has a farm shop with local products. Grocery stores can be found both at Lierbyen and Sylling.

From Sylling, the route descends quickly towards Lake Tyrifjorden, Norway’s fifth-largest lake. In the early 1900s, steamships such as D/S Ringerike and D/S Activ connected the communities around the lake, carrying both passengers and freight between the many small harbours. Today it´s a great place for a rest and a swim. The return back to Drammen starts with a steady climb from the lakeshore before the former railway once again guides you through the beautiful landscapes of Lier. The map includes a slightly different return route, allowing you to avoid the section with gates. Around 85% of the route is on asphalt, with the remaining sections on gravel roads and easy trails.
