Cool and Crazy

It’s easy to be captivated by this rugged landscape, surrounded by the invigorating Barents Sea.

The cycling journey between Båtsfjord and Berlevåg offers unforgettable natural experiences and is perfect for those who wish to explore northernmost Norway from the seat of a bicycle. Known as the Arctic Coast Road, this route promises dramatic landscapes. The ride traverses mountains and plateaus along well-maintained roads winding through open terrain. It continues past rugged, rocky cliffs with views of the sea crashing against white sandy beaches. Kjølnes Lighthouse, located 5 km outside of town, stands as an iconic landmark facing the wild Barents Sea. This lighthouse has been operating since 1900, and the current structure reflects the post-war functionalist style.

In the center of Berlevåg, you’ll find shops, eateries, and accommodation. The entire town was burned down in 1944, so all buildings date from after World War II. The coastal port lies at the breakwater where the Hurtigruten coastal ships arrive almost simultaneously heading both northbound and southbound. The port is renowned for its robust breakwater, reinforced with four-armed concrete tetrapods that interlock, growing stronger as they withstand the forces of nature. Here, waves can reach nearly 10 meters high.

Combining cycling with hiking is highly recommended, and Tanahorn is a popular hiking trail that offers spectacular views over the ocean just a few kilometers outside the center.

Berlevåg gained nationwide fame through the documentary Cool and Crazy featuring the local male choir. The iconic images of older men singing outdoors in stormy weather captured Norway’s heart in 2001. The town also features in literature; in Karen Blixen’s book Babette’s Feast, the story is set in Berlevåg.

Midnight Sun between May 15 and July 28.
