Today you cycle on quiet country roads with very little traffic in the beginning and a little more as you get closer to Ørje along Rødnessjøen.
Ørje is a small, charming town, very close to the Swedish border, where the two cycling routes, Villmarksruta and Unionsleden, intersect. Here you’ll find a canal museum, gallery, several cozy cafés, a sports store, and a grocery shop. If you’re lucky, you can watch the fascinating spectacle of boats passing through the canal locks.
From Ørje, we choose to cycle along the western side of the canal, recommended for its lower traffic, even though the officially marked Route 9 runs on the eastern side. Ahead lie winding country roads toward the next village, Strømsfoss. Here you’ll find Møllerens Hus, a welcoming café by the canal. The old Strømsfoss Mill has been transformed into an art gallery. Nearby, at Kanaltangen, you can experience unique overnight stays in “Stubbehytter,” small wooden cabins where you sleep in hammocks (bring your own). To book, call +47 41 33 89 00. Coastal Cabin “Fjøset” is also possible to book for self-service in Strømsfoss.
