Havøysund
Where Nature and Sea meet in Dramatic Beauty
The road from Havøysund is one of the most scenic and rugged in the country.
The northbound and southbound Hurtigruten ships arrive almost simultaneously in Havøysund in the morning. Arriving from seaside, with Havøygavlen on one side and the imposing Sukkertoppen mountain on the other, is a delightful way to start the day. From the harbor, you can see the road that winds along the shoreline, ready to be explored by bicycle.
It´s worth spending some time in Havøysund. There are places to eat and accommodations available. It’s a good idea to stock up at the local store for your day’s ride, as there are few shopping opportunities along the way. The store also offers free coffee. Don’t miss the artwork by artist Runi Horn, situated on the hill behind the church, which provides a unique atmosphere. You can also cycle up to the wind park at Havøygavlen, the highest point on the island. Consider also a short, easy hike that will lead you to the cliffs and rocks at Storvika, on the southwest side of the island, with breathtaking views of the sea. Another simple excursion is to Kråkungan in the northeast, where remnants of early 20th-century settlements can be found. Be sure to visit Russehula, which dates back to the Pomor trade era in Finnmark (circa 1750-1920). Pomor captains who couldn’t sell all their goods would hide them in the cave, returning to claim them later. Today, the cave is a public recreational area.
The national tourist route that leads out of Havøysund offers an exceptional nature experience. Cyclists can enjoy smooth asphalt roads that hug the coastline and climb over mountain passes—be prepared for occasional strong winds. Along the way, iconic rest stops and sightings of reindeer and sea eagles are common.
Midnight Sun between May 14 and July 29.
