Red 'Unionsleden' signs.

Unionsleden is 350 km long and stretches from Moss in Norway to Karlstad in Sweden. When you cycle Unionsleden you will be struck by the beautiful varied landscape. One moment you cycle through villages, the next along one of all the lakes. You will cycle on winding gravel roads through forests and open landscapes with grazing animals.

Lots of nature, silence and tranquility. Canals, locks, rivers and lakes. Close to wildlife. Opportunity to see moose, hares, badgers, cranes, deer and lots of birds. Cycling through small, cozy towns. Some cycling on a split road, but mainly on low-traffic roads. Day 1 should not be cycled with children due to a good deal of traffic on the road.

Much of the trip is on asphalt (75% asphalt, 25% gravel) so you need a bike that rolls well, but you also have to take into account some gravel that is sometimes a bit loose. A hybrid bike or gravel will probably be the best choice. Some stages with gravel and a good number of altitude meters mean that you should be somewhat used to cycling for this long trip.

We recommend you to check opening hours for hotels and cafes. Several of them are only open in the summer. Would definitely recommend booking accommodation in advance as it is far between the hotels.
