From Moss, the official Coastal Route crosses the Oslofjord by ferry to Horten. Our route instead continues north towards Oslo, allowing you to experience Norway’s capital before heading south again along the western side of the fjord.
Leaving Moss, the route passes the waterfall Mossefossen and continues through Verket, an attractive historic area with old wooden workers’ houses. A short section that follows is less interesting, and you’ll need to cycle in traffic for around 2.5 km. The route becomes much more pleasant when it joins the former Smaalensbanen railway line, now converted into a walking and cycling path. In Hølen, you can leave the line for a very short detour to a pleasant café by the river. You can also add around 3.5 km to visit the coastal town of Son. Another option is Drøbak, a small coastal town around 9 km from the main route.
The route continues through open countryside and forest along Mosseveien. This road is popular with road cyclists, but for parts of the way you share the road with cars. Gradually, the route returns to the Oslofjord. The ice cream at Nesset is famous locally and particularly popular on sunny days. On the final approach to Oslo, traffic on Mosseveien can be heavy, but you have a separate cycle path all the way into the city centre. There are plenty of beaches and opportunities for a swim along the way.
Oslo has plenty to see and do, and it is well worth spending an extra day in the capital before continuing south along the western side of the Oslofjord towards Kristiansand.
