Explore the beauty of Norway’s coast on an exciting bike tour through Sunnhordland, the archipelago south of Bergen. This adventurous journey offers a perfect blend of natural experiences, cultural immersion, and gastronomic delights. Several ferry and boat trips along the route provide varied experiences, and we offer you tips for side trips and attractions along the way.
The journey begins in the World Heritage City of Bergen, and then an express boat takes you to Sunde, followed by a 31-km cycle ride to Rosendal. From Rosendal, you’ll cycle along the fjord’s edge towards Tysnes Island, passing charming coastal villages and spending the night at the historic Haaheim Gaard, where you’ll savor local and seasonal dishes. After pedaling through picturesque coastal villages, you’ll arrive in Stord, where you can relax in the hotel’s new wellness area. You’ll ride along coastal roads, enjoying panoramic views of the Norwegian archipelago before reaching the lively harbor of Bekkjarvik, where you’ll stay at a family-run inn with award-winning chefs creating an extraordinary dining experience.
The journey concludes in Bergen after another boat trip. The Sunnhordland bike tour is the ultimate way to explore the stunning nature, rich culture, and exquisite cuisine of this beautiful region. Sunnhordland proudly holds the status of a sustainable destination with a commitment to environmentally responsible development, the preservation of its unique culture, support for the local community, and ensuring your well-being throughout the journey.
The tour is not available for last minute bookings. It must be booked minimum 30 days prior to departure.
This trip can be combined with the tour in Hardanger for a 11-day cycling trip. You start with the Hardanger tour (individual arrival Bergen, train from Bergen to Voss) and continue with this tour. To book this combined tour, please send us an e-mail at info@norwaybybike.com.
Bergen, often called the Gateway to the Fjords of Norway, is both a UNESCO World Heritage City and a European City of Culture. It offers a remarkable blend of dramatic nature, rich history, and a lively urban scene that can be enjoyed year-round. A stroll along Bryggen, the old Hanseatic Wharf with its iconic wooden buildings, brings the past to life with a medieval charm that still resonates among its small museums, shops, cafés, and restaurants.
From the city center, the Fløibanen funicular whisks you up to Mount Fløyen in just a few minutes. At the summit, breathtaking views over Bergen await, along with forest trails, a welcoming café, and plenty of spots perfect for capturing unforgettable photos. In the very heart of the city lies the Fish Market, a bustling hub since the 1200s. Today, it remains a vibrant gathering place where you can taste fresh seafood and Norwegian delicacies like salmon and king crab, while also browsing local produce, fruit, and souvenirs. After your day of exploring, you will spend the night at Hotel Heimen in Bergen.

Bergen is the Gateway to the Fjords of Norway. As a UNESCO World Heritage City and a European City of Culture, the Bergen region has the ideal combination of nature, culture and exciting urban life all year around. If you want to stay a day in Bergen, you can extend this package and book accomodation on request.
Individual arrival to Bergen. Pick up rental bikes. You take the expressboat from Bergen to Sunde at 12.45. Bike tour from Sunde to Rosendal (31 km). Accommodation and dinner at Rosendal Fjordhotell.

After breakfast you have time to explore Rosendal. There are several hikes to choose from, or you can go for a bike trip. We recommend visiting the Manor House from 1665, surrounded by beautiful and historic grounds, including a Renaissance Rose Garden. You can also visit the Folgefonn Centre, to learn about the Folgefonna National Park, the Hardangerfjord area and the environment in general. Accommodation and dinner at Rosendal Fjordhotel.

The first cycling stage to Årsnes (10 km) is quite tough. From Rosendal, you will see some traffic. The road runs through lush farmlands, with lovely views of the Hardangerfjord.
You take the ferry across the fjord and bike towards Uggdal (45 km). Known for its distinctive and personal atmosphere, Haaheim Gaard is a great place to spend the night. Growing their own herbs and vegetables in the garden, they will serve you a tasty meal based on local produce and seasonal ingredients.

Today we highly recommend biking a detour, via the beautiful village Onarhamn, towards Hodnanes (18 km). You then take the ferry across to Stord, and to Leirvik (14 km). Leirvik is a small city on the island of Stord, with a nice city centre and harbour. Accomodation at Stord Hotel.

Today you bike from Leirvik via Fitjar to Sandvikvåg (38 km). Ferry to Husavik, and then a short bicycle tour to Bekkjarvik (7 km). This stage follows the signposts of the North Sea Route, which runs from Egersund to Bergen. Signposts only to Sandvikvåg. Some uphill from Leirvik to Sagvåg, then easy cycling through a lush cultural landscape.
Bekkjarvik is an old trading station packed with coastal culture and with a fishery museum at Bekkjarvik Torg. Be ready for yet another fantastic food experience at Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri.
From Bekkjarvik you bike to Hufthamar (20 km). We recommend spending some time in Austevoll before you leave for Bergen. You find several nice detours along the way to Hufthamar. The Express boat to Bergen departs from Hufthamar at 15:05 and arrive in Bergen at 15:55.

This is a well-curated trip in terms of route and accommodations and the planning/prep/communication in advance was just so - once set in motion by the organizers, we flowed through the week easily. Biking through these islands was both an intimate and majestic experience: the quiet of our rides was enormous and to be inside those big views, exhilarating. Norwegian drivers are gracious and alert; all of our personal interactions were warm. Bikes were super. Meals were delightful; so helpful to have all three included. Luggage transport was smooth. Do pack rain/wind gear. Our only wish would be that the trip had lasted longer!
